Coffin Storm – Arcana Rising: A Nostalgic Tribute with Thrash Energy and Doom Undertones

Coffin Storm’s Arcana Rising delivers an enjoyable dose of thrash energy, combining speed and intensity with doom elements. The result is a fast-paced, nostalgic homage to classic metal

Coffin Storm’s debut album, Arcana Rising, breathes new life into metal nostalgia. The gritty, old-school production and cover art are clear nods to the unpolished underground metal of the 1980s. With experienced members Apollyon (Aura Noir, Lamented Souls), Bestial Tormentor (Infernö, Lamented Souls), and Fenriz (Darkthrone), the band taps into their deep musical roots and distinct expertise to craft a sound that feels familiar and comforting.

Over Frozen Moors kicks off the album with thrashy, fast-paced riffs reminiscent of early thrash metal’s raw intensity. Fenriz’s vocals strike a balance between dramatic and impish, calling back to his Isengard days while also borrowing a bit of theatrical flair reminiscent of Reverend Bizarre.

The title track, Arcana Rising, shifts the tone into doom metal territory, slowing the pace to create a dense, atmospheric experience. This track contrasts with the speed of others, allowing the band’s doom influences to shine through. Open the Gallows returns to the album’s faster, thrash-oriented roots, with its extended runtime giving space for the track to build in intensity. The final two tracks, Ceaseless Abandon and Clockwork Cult, maintain a high level of energy, ensuring the album concludes with the same vigor it began.

Arcana Rising offers an enjoyable mix of thrash intensity and classic doom metal elements. Coffin Storm’s debut pays tribute to the foundations of traditional metal, drawing inspiration from bands like Pentagram, while injecting a mischievous spirit akin to Witchfinder General. It’s a fun and easygoing take on doom metal, providing a satisfying listen without being overly demanding.
